unfortunately I don't know the answer to this question. I too have found the push button on this gate to exist difficult. I too noticed that you have to actually position your finger only correct to go it to release. We don't go on the gate closed that often simply when someone comes to the front door and I want to keep the dogs out of the manner. We aren't having to push button the release push button that often. Pitiful I'g not any help but I concur its very difficult to open.
